Vertical Slat Dining Chair

General Info

Solid Wood Chairs This original design of our collection is exceptionally ruggedly constructed with great care and attention to producing perfect mortice and tennon joints that will ensure the integrity of the chair for generations to come. The curved, angled backrest make this a very comfortable chair, ideally suited to more formal settings. The chair is designed to have a solid wood seat (our standard), riempie (woven leather seating favoured in Southern Africa) or upholstered seats (all Savanna Wood chairs look stunning with upholstered leather seats).

Reclaimed African Hardwood Info

Chairs require particular attention to their construction as they are subject to much more stress and strain than other pieces of furniture. Chairs (including stools and benches) and beds are the only furniture pieces that bear the sometimes considerable weight of people! Building a chair is a very specialised and accurate skill that cannot be compromised, as the consequence of a chair collapsing under a person can be serious. The key to fine chair construction is to have exceptional joints that fit perfectly, yet accommodate the odd angles needed to make a chair comfortable. No craftsman can cut a joint, particularly an angled joint, as accurately as a modern woodworking machine. At Savanna Wood we have invested in the finest and most precise machinery available to cut exact fitting joints that will ensure a lifetime of comfortable seating. A chair must also be comfortable to sit in. The back rest of our Vertical Slat Chair is angled to fit comfortably and give exceptional lumbar support. In addition, the backrest is curved and the top rail laminated to give a comfortable yet very strong design. At the end of the day, the best way to test the comfort of a chair is to build it and sit in it – for a long time. That is what we do at Savanna Wood!
