Reclaimed African Hardwood Info

This uniquely styled chair is handcrafted from specially selected reclaimed Zambezi Teak railway sleepers or ties. The back rest and seat are ergonomically designed to give hours of comfortable seating at one of our fine dining or boardroom tables. The solid timber backrest and leg are crafted and moulded from one continuous slab of the finest recycled furniture timber in the world, resulting in an exceptionally well constructed and strong chair.

At Savanna Wood we pride ourselves on the quality of our chair construction, and our unique Tonga chair is no exception. The timber used to construct the chair is carefully chosen. Grain direction is very important, especially with a backrest and leg moulded from one continuous piece of lumber. Select timber pieces are first planed and the grain inspected to ensure that it is continuous and oriented along the line that the final back rest will take. The shape of the backrest is then marked out using a template before being carefully cut from the solid block of beautiful reclaimed timber with an oversized heavy duty bandsaw. Unfortunately, this process does result in the loss of some of this exceptionally valuable timber, but the importance of proper grain-orientation cannot be over emphasised. The roughly shaped backrest is then fixed to a specially built jig and moulded on a high speed moulder modified for this purpose. The final touch ups to the shape are done by hand with a spoke shave. Mortice and tennon joints are cut at the exact angle required on our pair of state of the art mortice and tennon machine cutters before each joint is hand fitted to ensure a perfect fit. The seat is carefully cut out to rough shape with a bandsaw then hollowed and shaped by hand with carving chisels and a spoke shave. The chair carcass (backrest, front legs, side rails and stretchers) are assembled, glued and doweled in a custom built clamp that ensures that the frame is assembled perfectly square. Before removal from the clamp corner blocks are fitted to give the chair extra stability. It is now ready for the hand carved seat to be fitted.

While all this is going on there are numerous quality inspection points to ensure the final product is immaculate. From assembly, the chair goes for the long process of sanding and hand rubbing to give the finishing touch to a masterpiece!

Reclaimed African Hardwood Info

The triple slat chair has been carefully developed to provide excellent back support and structural integrity while reducing weight. This is particularly important when using such heavy, dense timber. Great attention was paid to the style and shape of the chair while bearing in mind the above requirements. The result is very pleasing form with a soundly engineered structure.

Timber is very carefully selected to ensure there are no knots or cross grains, particularly at the joints. However, it must be appreciated that with timber this hard it is to an extent brittle and if dropped onto a hard surface may chip or in extreme situations crack.
The chair is designed to have a solid wood seat (our standard), riempie (woven leather seating favoured in Southern Africa) or upholstered seats (all Savanna Wood chairs look stunning with upholstered leather seats).
Our chairs are crafted from African Hardwoods that were used in the 19th and early 20th century to build houses, railroads, bridges and much else. We seek out rare sources of this timber from house demolitions or where hundred year old rail tracks are being replaced with concrete to produce the exquisite furniture of our Savanna Wood Reclaimed Hardwood Collection. The timber is exceedingly attractive with a rich red brown colour that polishes up like glass due to the extremely fine, hard nature of the grain.

Our chairs are crafted from Zambezi Teak, a very dense, and therefore hard, wood. It is sometimes mistaken for Asian, Indian or Indonesian teak, which is a completely different species. Our Zambezi Teak is very much harder and more difficult to work. However, because it is so hard it is extremely resistant to biological attack and physical ware and tare, and will last, if looked after, for many hundreds of years.

Reclaimed African Hardwood Info

Chairs require particular attention to their construction as they are subject to much more stress and strain than other pieces of furniture. Chairs (including stools and benches) and beds are the only furniture pieces that bear the sometimes considerable weight of people! Building a chair is a very specialised and accurate skill that cannot be compromised, as the consequence of a chair collapsing under a person can be serious. The key to fine chair construction is to have exceptional joints that fit perfectly, yet accommodate the odd angles needed to make a chair comfortable. No craftsman can cut a joint, particularly an angled joint, as accurately as a modern woodworking machine. At Savanna Wood we have invested in the finest and most precise machinery available to cut exact fitting joints that will ensure a lifetime of comfortable seating. A chair must also be comfortable to sit in. The back rest of our Vertical Slat Chair is angled to fit comfortably and give exceptional lumbar support. In addition, the backrest is curved and the top rail laminated to give a comfortable yet very strong design. At the end of the day, the best way to test the comfort of a chair is to build it and sit in it – for a long time. That is what we do at Savanna Wood!

Harvested Zambezi Teak Info

The wildness and beauty of the African bush growing on the deep and ancient sands of the Kalahari veldt belies the savagely harsh conditions under which diverse species of flora manage to prosper and grow. To survive these adverse conditions requires a resilience and toughness unknown in other species. One of the hardest and most durable of these African hardwood trees, Baikiaea plurijuga, a.k.a. Zambezi Teak, is amongst the most beautiful timbers in the world, with a fine, close grain and deep, rich natural colour. Savanna Wood harvest B. plurijuga on a strictly sustainable basis from the vast forests of Matabeleland situated on the fringe of the Kalahari Desert, under the watchful supervision of the Forestry Commission, an internationally respected body who are charged with the preservation of all indigenous forests.  Savanna Wood pay royalties on all timber cut to Forestry Commission and into a trust for development projects in the communities living on the fringes of the forests. These projects include self sufficiency gardening projects, installation of boreholes, development of school and clinic infrastructure and so on (please see our sections on ‘Community Projects’, the Savanna Wood ‘Employment Policy’ and ‘Preserving the Zambezi Teak forests’). Because they benefit so much from these arrangements, it is in the communities’ interests to preserve the forests. If they did not benefit in this manner it would not be in their interests to look after the forest, and they would simply cut the trees down and convert it to agricultural use. This would be a disaster on two counts: firstly we would lose the teak forests, and secondly the very fragile soils of the Kalahari sands would rapidly deteriorate under peasant agricultural practice and become desert wasteland. The sustainable utilization of these forests is therefore essential to their preservation.

Harvested Zambezi Teak Info

Zambezi Teak, characteristically of many African hardwoods, is exceptionally hard and durable. In 1952 a worldwide enquiry was instituted that explored every possible timber to find the most suitable material for making the floors of the London Corn Exchange.  It had to be of particular hardness and durability because of the heavy use to which it would be put and the damaging effect of the corn kernels ground underfoot.  After much deliberation and a series of stringent tests, a decision was reached to make the floors out of Zambezi Teak. Zambezi Teak was proven to be the hardest and most durable wood in the world for this purpose. It has been extensively used for railway sleepers (ties), but very seldom for fine furniture because of the great difficulties in working it. We at Savanna Wood have developed methods of work to handle this magnificent but steely hard timber.
