Ndlovu The African Elephant. The greatest creature to roam the earths surface, and hence the name we have chosen to represent our most magnificent product. Built within sight of arguably the most spectacular natural wonder of the world, the Victoria Falls, (the largest curtain of falling water on the globe, measuring 1.7km in length and dropping from a height of 110 metres), the Ndlovu table is truly a statement of permanent beauty.
Each Ndlovu table is unique. When we send scouts out into the interior of Central Africa to search for old reclaimable sources of African Teak, we particularly seek out the very rare long timbers found in the beams of old houses and barns, or where two railway lines meet and extra long timbers straddle the junction.
Once these timbers are transported back to our factory (often over thousands of kilometres), we select out the best of these special pieces and decide on the size and style of table to be made from them. Often we do not get sufficient suitable timber in a shipment to manufacture a table, and so place them aside and wait until we are lucky enough to find just the right piece before proceeding.
We manufacture to the maximum practical table top thickness of approximately 3 inches (75mm), unless commissioned by a client to produce a slimmer design or the timbers sourced do not allow for this thickness. Due to the extreme density and toughness of the timbers (they have been seasoned by the elements over the decades to almost the consistency of steel!), these tables are extremely heavy, weighing up to 500kg, or 1100 lbs. There is little danger of one ever being illicitly removed from the rightful owner!
We will offer these wonderful pieces on a once off basis to selected clients. If you require notification of pieces as they become available, please contact us.

When timber arrives at the Savanna Wood factory, it is carefully graded and the very best pieces are put aside for special projects, such as building an Ndlovu table. These specially selected beams may take two years to season properly due to the extreme density of the timber, but they will not be touched until they have reached the correct moisture content and are properly seasoned. The
beautifully grained solid top of the Matetsi table is supported by
massive turned pillars of solid Zambezi Teak. Named after the Matetsi
River that brings life sustaining water to the arid Kalahari sand veldt
upon which grow the Zambezi Teak tree. This was the timber originally
harvested to build the great railroads of Central Africa.

At Savanna Wood we take great care and pride in the construction of our
tables. They are our Flagship products and we believe that you will
not find a better constructed or more durable table in the world. Our
table tops are solid timber right through, with no false edges to give
the appearance of a thick top. 2 to 3 inches deep (50 to 75
millimetres), these magnificent slabs of the finest furniture timber
are supported on beautifully designed and engineered turned pillar legs
and held in place by specially manufactured steel brackets, capable of
taking the full weight of the table while allowing for the natural
movement of solid wood.
At the turn of the last century railroads were built into Central
Africa to open up the region to trade and administration. The
sleepers or ties used to build these railways were harvested from a
locally available resource, African Hardwoods. This timber, and in
particular Zambezi Teak, is incredibly hard and durable and thus
perfectly suited to the requirements of the Railroad Engineers. So hard
that it is impervious to physical or biological attack, these
magnificent timbers did not require any treatment to preserve them, and
their beautiful, rich close grain polishes up to lustrous finish
unmatched by any other timber in the world.
The majority of these timbers have long since been replaced by
concrete. However, some still exist on old rail lines or in mines, or
were collected by locals when they were lifted to use as fence posts or
building material. At Savanna Wood we have teams scouring Central
Africa for the wonderful and valuable timbers to manufacture into truly
unique Furniture products.
The timber used to manufacture your masterpiece is probably the finest
timber utilised anywhere in the world to make furniture, extremely hard
with a fine, close grain and deep, rich natural colour. Zambezi Teak is
a very dense, and therefore hard, wood. It is sometimes mistaken for
Asian, Indian or Indonesian teak, which is a completely different
species. Our Zambezi Teak is very much harder and more difficult to
work. However, because it is so hard it is extremely resistant to
biological attack and physical ware and tare, and will last, if looked
after, for many hundreds of years.
Each piece is checked for quality no less that six times during the
production process and no piece is allowed out of the factory without a
final, thorough, check by the Senior Management Team.
The furniture is constructed utilising traditional methods of excellence.
Our designs reflect our practical methods of construction of the
tables, while enhancing the natural beauty, colour and grain of the
timber used. The massive turned legs of our Matetsi tables compliment
the solid strength and beauty of the timber.
Our tables are designed to be dismantled with the removal of a few
bolts and brackets to allow for ease of transportation and to
drastically reduce freight charges while providing an extremely strong
and durable construction.

Resting on four massive turned pillars, this is a very impressive piece that allows for convivial banter or serious business discussions! The cleverly designed cross braces leave plenty of leg room to sit back with a fine glass of wine after dinner and admire the wonderful timber used to construct your very own masterpiece. The story of that timber begins over a hundred years ago, when railroads were built into Central Africa to open up the region to trade and administration. This timber has been seasoned by the elements over the decades to the consistency of steel, making it extremely difficult to work with, but virtually indestructible. Its most attractive features however, are the lustrous colour and the rich, close grain that give each piece an opulence and finish carefully emphasized by the painstaking attention with which it is handmade. When you see the material we start with, you will be amazed at how such a tough, cracked and wasted slab of timber can be turned into such a magnificent product!
Built from Zambezi Teak, an exceptionally hard and durable African Hardwood. Its most attractive features however, are the lustrous colour and the rich, close grain that give each piece an opulence and finish carefully emphasized by the painstaking attention with which it is handmade.
In 1952 a worldwide enquiry was instituted that explored every possible timber to find the most suitable material for making the floors of the London Corn Exchange. It had to be of particular hardness and durability because of the heavy use to which it would be put and the damaging effect of the corn kernels ground underfoot. After much deliberation and a series of stringent tests, a decision was reached to make the floors out of Zambezi Teak. It has been extensively used for railway sleepers (ties), but very seldom for fine furniture because of the great difficulties in working it. We at Savanna Wood have developed methods of work to handle this magnificent but steely hard timber.

Elegantly sociable, the round Matetsi table is a fine place to while away an evening with good friends and a bottle of Cape wine. Even the beautifully grained table top made of the worlds hardest timbers becomes a conversation piece. The table has a central turned pillar allowing unhindered leg room. Should you require a slimmer version, we will happily oblige with a more slender 30 millimetre (inch and a quarter) top and scaled down central pillar.
Our standard diameters are:
- 4 feet (1.2 meters) (4 seater) or
- 5 feet (1.5 meters) (6 seater).

Elegantly sociable, the round Matetsi table is a fine place to while away an evening with good friends and a bottle of Cape wine. Even the beautifully fissured table top made of the worlds best reclaimed timber becomes a conversation piece! The table has a central turned pillar allowing unhindered leg room. Should you require a slimmer version, we will happily oblige with a more slender 30 millimetre (inch and a quarter) top and scaled down central pillar.
Manufactured from ancient African hardwoods that have been reclaimed principally from railroads, the timber used was harvested fifty to a hundred and fifty years ago by early colonial settlers. We purchase the railway sleepers, or ties, as they are replaced by concrete. They are now a very rare commodity, and therefore a unique investment. Because of the rarity of the resource, only a limited number of tables can ever be made. Their value is enhanced by the fact that they are from a fully reclaimed, or recycled, source, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful grain and texture of probably the finest furniture wood in the world without any guilt that a tree may have been cut down to afford you the pleasure!
Because of the years spent on the railway line where the timber is exposed to the full fury of the elements and massively heavy trains thundering overhead, it develops a particular character or distressed look. This happens to varying degrees depending on the length of time the timber has been down, its position on the line and so on. This character only adds to the beauty of the wonderful timber from which it originated.
An investment of a lifetime that will last for many lifetimes.

Based
on the traditional English Rectory Table, this splendid piece boasts
full width railway timbers to give a rugged hand crafted masterpiece
that goes perfectly with the Rectory bench. Solidly constructed and
versatile, it is ideal as a social kitchen table or occasional table
for a veranda, wine cellar or any other place special to you
The timber used to build this wonderful piece is probably the finest
and most valuable timber used anywhere in the world to build furniture.
Finest because of its unique properties of extreme hardness and density
(just try to pick up a Savanna Wood table and you will see what we
mean) and beautiful colour and rich close grain, opulently finished by
our expert craftsmen. African hardwoods, and especially the Zambezi
Teak used at Savanna Wood, largely as a result of adaptation to the
tough environment they grow in, are much denser than other so-called
hardwood species used to build furniture. This makes the timber very
difficult to work with, but virtually indestructible. At Savanna Wood
we take great pride and care to build our products to the highest
standards, with the best and most effective joinery methods being used
for each piece. Thus our products will last many generations if card
for.

ant they will increase in value exponentially, as will the Savanna Wood
furniture made from them!
At Savanna Wood we take great care and pride in the construction of our
tables, and the Rectory Table is no exception. They are our Flagship
products and we believe that you will not find a better constructed or
