The construction of a Savanna Wood table

At Savanna Wood we take great care and pride in the construction of our tables.

What you see is what you get.
Savanna Wood tabletops are a uniform thickness of carefully selected matching timbers. We do not attach a false lip around the top to give the appearance of a thicker top.

Making allowances for wood movement.
Savanna Wood do not glue a timber across the table end in order to neaten up the end as this will compromise the long term integrity of the top. Please see our guide to ‘Understanding Wood Movement’. Tops are attached with metal clamps into a slot in the leg beams to allow the top to expand and contract freely.

Design.
Our designs reflect our practical methods of construction of the tables, while enhancing the natural beauty, colour and grain of the timber used. The massive turned legs of our Matetsi tables compliment the solid strength and beauty of the timber, while the simplicity and engineered elegance of our Shangani legs and trusses emphasise the origin of the timber in simple railway sleepers that played such an important part in that engineering marvel, the railway system, that opened up Africa at the end of the 19th century. Our tables are designed to be dismantled with the removal of a few bolts and brackets to allow for ease of transportation and to drastically reduce freight charges while providing an extremely strong and durable construction.

Finish.
At Savanna Wood we finish our tables with between 3 and 5 coats of nitrocellulose lacquer. Nitrocellulose is a natural fibre found in woody plants. We have selected this lacquer finish for its excellent clarity and depth, as well as its heat, water, solvent, acid and alkali resistance.
The finish is rubbed down between each coat after being allowed to cure thoroughly to ensure a silky smooth finish of optimum clarity and strength.

Lamination.
Every batch of glue bought into the Savanna Wood factory is tested on 5 sample boards to ensure that the glue join is stronger than the timber joined. If any glue join fails before the timber, the entire batch is returned to the manufacturer. Thus you are assured of the integrity on your tabletop.
